Building a KAGER house: Neža and Urban’s story

A conversation with Neža and Urban, owners of a KAGER house

A home created at just the right moment

Five years after moving into their KAGER house, Neža and Urban shared their story with us. The 140 m² house, where they live with their three children, was designed around light, a connection with nature and openness. Our relaxed conversation takes us through their experience of construction and planning, as well as how they live in the house today.

They moved into their new home just before the pandemic began. A period that brought challenges for many gave them the opportunity to calmly focus on landscaping the surroundings and creating a welcoming home.

Why KAGER?

Large expanses of glass, natural materials and deep roof overhangs

When asked why they chose a KAGER house, they immediately point to the large expanses of glass, the open floor plan and the exposed timber frame. They also mention the deep roof overhangs, natural materials and, above all, the feeling that the house is truly theirs.

Working with our consultant Aleš, they designed the entire floor plan around their own wishes, also drawing inspiration from homes they visited during our open-house events.

What do their friends say about the house?

Solar power, everyday running costs and cleaning the glass

When friends enter the house for the first time, they are immediately impressed by the openness of the space, the abundance of light and the sense of connection with nature. With a smile, however, they quickly add that all that glass must take quite a lot of work. Cleaning it is Neža’s domain—and something she actually enjoys.

Asked about running costs, Urban joked: “The house doesn’t cost us anything.” For most of the year, the solar power system covers all their needs while also generating a surplus for much of the year.

Would they choose KAGER again?

If they were building again today, they would certainly change a few things: perhaps choose a little more floor space or add another children’s room. At the same time, they stress that these are details that do not affect the quality of life in the house.

Finally, we asked whether they would choose a KAGER house again. Their answer was short and clear: “YES.” Because of the relationship, the cooperation, the calm process and the feeling that this really is their home.
